What Exactly Is Dog Psychology?

I have been asked to explain what Dog Psychology is many times. Psychology is defined as the science of the mind or of mental states and processes and the science of human and animal behavior. Dog Psychology is basically the study of dog mental states and processes and dog behavior.

It amazes me how many people subscribe to the "positive only all the time" philosophy of dog training and call any other training method that is not positive reinforcement training unscientific! Many of these people are well intentioned but they just plain miss the boat! How can Dog Psychology, the actual study of dog behavior and how a dog thinks and processes information be unscientific?

The most rewarding gift that Ann and I get out of using Dog Psychology methods and techniques in training and rehabilitation is that it works! The number of clients who describe their frustration with other training methods from "positive reinforcement" to "e-collar" training are numerous and many tell us they didn't get the results they were looking for.

I can tell you there is no better feeling in the world than having someone truly "get" what Dog Psychology is all about. The gift I receive from teaching you about dog behavior is seeing the relationship with you and your dog transformed right in front of your eyes to one of trust and respect! Seeing someone realize that the impossible is possible truly brings me great joy!

Any behavior issue can be addressed using Dog Psychology methods. Ann and I both love working with the dogs that everyone else has written off! Check out our website the link is on the menu to the right, call and ask us questions about our classes, programs and training and rehabilitation methods. We would love to hear from you!

I have been to other trainers who knew how to teach me to teach my dog how to heel, sit, stay, etc. But never has the training, with the same objectives in mind, i.e. to have a dog who can perform those actions, been as meaningful to me as when Ann McDonald worked with me and my dog. Talk about dog psychology...Ann knows it and knows it well. Her ability to relate the training to how a dog thinks has made a HUGE difference in my relationship with my dog. He is much calmer and is making wonderful progress towards my goal of having him be a happy, calm, well behaved dog. I enjoy him more now because I don't get frustrated and end up giving in. The change in him is remarkable. He and I are continuing to work on what I have learned and he and I have much more fun now. Thanks Ann.

Hello Nick and Ann!

Our dog, Wiley, has had profound improvements in her behavior thanks to your training. She is much calmer and more attentive to my wife and I. My family has commented every time they have seen her for the past 2 months on how much better she is than the "wild" Wiley they knew before. Our work is not done with her, but now we have a solid foundation of how to approach any issues. Thanks for making the training not only valuable, but the fun factor was an added bonus! We are looking forward to the agility!

CHANCE said...

In February I adopted a beautiful, 13 month old, black German Shepherd from a rescue in Las Vegas, we named him Chance. I knew he would have some issues with him-having spent most of his young life in a shelter- but I had no idea! I have had dogs my whole life and have worked with several trainers over the years. I thought I had enough tools to rehabilitate Chance myself. After working with him for almost five months, there was minimal change. He could do the tricks sit, stay, and down, but his aggression was getting worst.
I was frustrated and about to give up when a family member recommended Ann McDonald at Balanced Dog! She worked with both Chance and myself, the results were amazing! Chance is much calmer and focused, and I am more confident in training him using the Dog Psychology methods that Ann has shown me. My family and neighbors couldn't believe it was the same dog!
Our deepest thanks to you Ann!
